Annual to Monthly Billing w/ 1Password

1Password

I recently walked through the process of migrating an 1Password Business account from an anuual-based subscription to monthly. A supposedly simple process, but after going through it, one with a few potential landmines.

Timing

First off, know that when the invoice arrives, it’s already too late to request a billing change.

This is due to the invoice being sent out after the existing yearly contract expires. If you want to make a change, make sure its done a couple of months in advance (1Password does notify you). If you fail to update your contract prior to the renewal, there is an one-time exception that an Account Specialist can apply. No guarantees, but I can confirm it does exist.

Migrating

Once the request has been put through, you’ll be informed that when the billing change occurs your tenant will be temporarily frozen until you enter a credit card on the backend. Be aware of the following when the change takes effect and plan accordingly:

  1. Staff will have account access blocked via web browser. Only through the app will access continue to be allowed.
  2. All passwords will be frozen. Staff can read stored credentials but editing or creating new passwords will not be allowed.
  3. All SCIM-tied accounts, irrespective of whether they’re administrative accounts or not, will have web browser access blocked.

The last point is important. If all of your administrative accounts are SCIM-tied, when the freeze occurs, you will be locked out of your tenant unable to add your credit card. Ensure you have a non-SCIM tied account with administrative rights prior to requesting the change.

Hope this helps.
